Wood Thrush

When bluegrass artist Laurie Lewis stepped onto a stage alone and sang this haunting song a capella, the experience of it stayed with me for weeks. I asked Laurie if I might interpret her beautiful song in a book, and try to put the power of her lyrics onto paper.

The papers and materials represent the natural world in color and texture, and the colored pencil work behind the words forms a gentle camouflage intended to slow the reader/viewer down so that the rhythm and meaning of each word reveals itself.

The two photos are my metaphors for thrush habitat and the impact of man's embrace, one fading as the other becomes more prominent. The leaf motif is repeated with the red bronze handmade button on the spine, adding a detail to set the stage for what lies within.
